Dawson Says Stram Upbeat Despite Poor Health
01.04.2005
As Hank Stram nears his next birthday, Chiefs Hall of Famer Len Dawson grows more concerned each day with the health of "The Mentor."
"Sugar diabetes is the main culprit," Dawson said Friday. "He can't reproduce red blood cells. You've got to have them to live. He has to have transfusions that take 16 to 17 hours a day."
Stram turns 82 on Monday. Dawson says he talks frequently with Stram, who joined Dawson in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003. It was Dawson, who quarterbacked the Chiefs to their only Super Bowl victory in the 1969 season under the guidance of Stram, who introduced his coach during the Hall of Fame ceremony in Canton, Ohio.
Stram was 124-76-10 as coach of the Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs after the franchise was moved in 1963. His final season was 1974. Dawson says Stram's memory is fading, and they rarely talk anymore about football.
